Government Commitment to Boost Maritime Tourism
In a significant move to boost maritime tourism, the Indonesian government has announced measures to facilitate the operations of cruise ships and luxury yachts in the country’s waters. The Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, confirmed that the government is committed to harmonizing various maritime regulations to ensure a seamless experience for cruise and yacht operators. This initiative aims to remove bureaucratic obstacles that hinder business operations and negatively impact Indonesia’s maritime tourism sector.

Simplified Regulations for Better Business Operations
“Regulations should not complicate our own operations. All rules must be harmonized for the national interest,” stated Minister Luhut on Saturday. The government guarantees easier access for cruise ships and yachts to operate in Indonesia, enabling people to enjoy new experiences aboard these vessels in cities like Jakarta, Semarang, Surabaya, Bali, and Labuan Bajo.
Benoa Port to Become Bali Maritime Tourism Hub
This announcement comes as a boon for yacht enthusiasts in Indonesia. The enhanced regulatory environment is expected to attract more cruise and yacht operators to the region. One significant development in this initiative is the transformation of Benoa Port in Denpasar, Bali, into the Bali Maritime Tourism Hub (BMTH). PT Pelindo (Persero), the state-owned port operator, is spearheading this project, with completion of the first phase anticipated by the end of 2024.

Increased Capacity for Cruise Ships
Arif Suhartono, President Director of Pelindo, emphasized that the BMTH development would expand the port’s capacity to accommodate up to four or five cruise ships simultaneously, compared to the current capacity of two. This expansion includes a 500-meter eastern dock extension, enabling two jumbo-sized cruise ships, each about 294 meters in length, to dock simultaneously.
